A Little Lunch Reflection: L’appétit vient en mangeant’ ...
The more Paul learnt about God the more he yearned for more (there are too many 'more' in that statement, hopefully that help to emphasize the point)…We are talking about Paul who wrote most of the New Testament books and yet he was the one caught saying “I want to know Christ--yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death” (Philippians 3: 10)
There are times when we feel like we
are losing the ‘appetite’ to study God’s words (the Bible) and we tend to pray
asking God to revive that appetite in us. It’s important to pray during those
situations, but sometimes we simply need to take the step of opening that Bible
and journey through it.
The French have a saying which says ‘l’appétit vient en
mangeant’ (appetite comes with/when eating). This is very true when it comes to
getting into the rhythm of studying the Word of God regularly… The best to
start from or get inspiration from will be Psalms 119, longest chapter in the
bible but I find it so short every time I read through it. I wish I could come
to the place where the author(s) of this chapter was, a place of intense friendship
with the Scriptures.
A friend asked me if I am actually learning something in
bible school and my answer is “so far theological studies has exposed how much
more I need to learn…” We may end up receiving degrees at the end of our bible
studies, pastors may end up retiring from active ministry due to age or other
valid reasons, but we should never think we have graduated from studying God
and His ways neither should we retire from doing so. Sometimes it’s the new
born Christian who you ministered to the other day and will come into your long
life with Christ and teach you something new about God.
Let’s keep on learning, let’s keep on eating this bread of
life.
Bonne appétit!
